Right folks, a couple of questions....

How do you remove the trim from round the top of the doors and the door pillar?? didn't want to come off too easily so I just left it.

Is the foam piece on the rear pillars available from the stealers?? If so I'll whap them off and buy new ones...

Whats the best way to remove the wiring loom?? It's all labeled up and removed from the boot area and sunroof, removed the dash part and labeled it, does it all have to go out through the hold bellow the fuse box and is it best to do this when the brake servo/ engine is out?? If so I'll do that first.

also I seem to recall that I have seen a diagram for the accessories socket for what plugs in where?? Anyone got this, cause a couple of plugs fell out and I just want to check where they go...

And finally how do you remove the door locks?? Can't quite see what happens there, looks like a clip in thing but don't want to damage.

Cheers Paul.

The gutter trim is fiddly to get off but start at the bottom of the a pillar working your way up till you get to the top them the remainder kind of rolls of the roof skin lip but can be a pita to get off with out damaging it.

The loom does have to come out through the whole in the bulkhead and removing the servo/MC assembly isn't nessesary but will help. There is a link in the link section at the top of the page and has BMW wiring diagrams including the acc juntion box one although most if not all the plugs are different so you cant really mix them up.

Not sure about the C pillar foams but just look on realoem.com to get the numbers and check with your dealer.

Door lock barrels are held in with a horse shoe clip which slides off the barrel side ways.

I've had a 4 stud set of 15inch BBS RS. They were so sexual wish i hadn't sold them tbh they are £££ for a nice set but they are worth it!
Ah niec one, well it says Wallaston on my key fob I got with the car but if that David Richards is a dealer I may phone them see what they have to say,
StuBeeDoo do you have a number for them??

So you can get 4 stud BBS RS?? winkeye I think I better get saving....
I recently had to dig up the history on my tech 1 sport and was told by my local dealer to call the BMW Car Information Phone Line on 09062 090001. Note that they charge you £1 per minute to call that line.

It took me a couple of minutes and I was told the original specification of the car, the names and numbers of all the dealers who'd previously serviced it, and the dates and mileage for those services.

I was told by the bloke I spoke to that he couldn't print out or email the information. I guess they want you hanging around on the phone paying them £1 per min, but you can just take the contact details and then phone the relevant dealers directly to get the extra info.

Nice to see another E30 being restored rather than broken. Another E30Zone hero.
Do you have any idea if they'd keep records of previously repaired cars?? IF so what's their number and I'll see if they know what damage was done back in 1991.
The dealer on the sticker became Robert Stern BMW. They were on the site at Four Pools until recently. The dealership was transferred to Worcester and they knocked the old garage down. Roberts Stern's number is 01905 459600, but I don't know detailed their old records will be. Hope it helps when tracing the history.

Good luck with the resto, good to see another tech 1 being saved.

not got there yet, I'll do that when it's up on the ramp getting the fuel tank out, filler neck and that bottle next to it so that I can get to the bolts easier, they're a bit buggered.

Cheers Hubble :D

iirc its 2 17mm nuts at the front behind the 2 plastic squares in the rubber strip. then there's a 10mm at each side coming in from behind the wing which you need to get behind the plastic arch to get to them

Well a good days work was done today, made some good progress and edging that step closer to getting the shell away to the body shop!

But anyway onto today.....

First off was the engine and box to be removed...
Image
Image

nice...:D
Image
Image
Image

Box split from engine...
Image
Image
Image
Image

The clutch looks buggered but it worked a treat but it probably wasn't long till it was gonna go...
Image
Image
Genuine BMW too, maybe the original...

Now was time to put the engine on my new engine stand! but the gearbox bolts weren't long enough to fit so it was a trip to B&Q and picked up the 4 bolts for a fiver so it was lined up and bolted on, but i was very unsure if it would hold the weight ok, but it was fine, it's rated to 450kg but you still get second thoughts when lowering the engine!lol.
Image
Image

Still it doesn't half flex...
Image

The bolts are bent!!
Image

Any way with that done it was ovet to the ramp 8) to start removing bits fron underneath...
Image
I love this ramp...:D

A quick few shots of the underside...
Image
Image
Image

but as usual there's a lot of rusted solid bolts so a good spray up with a bit of WD and left for a while, I got the exhaust heat shields, fuel filler and a few other pieces off tho..

Next up was to tackle the wiring loom... I had to cut through a small section that lead under the pipe for the fuel lines under the rear seat area though as it seems to be wired in with no plugs to remove it but it was only 4 different coloured wires so it's no big loss easy solved when the time comes to re-fit. not sure if anyone else had to do this?? :?

Anyway starting to come out...
Image
Image

and its out
Image

now I could see the area of the bulkhead that was making the foot spa in the passenger side...
Image

And the result of the days work...
Image
Image
Image

So overall a good day but still loads to do but I'm over half way

Yip, undo the four bolts on the diff, then undo the bolts on the gearbox, doesn't matter which set of three it'll either remove the prop doughnut or it wont, then the end that is on the gearbox has a small shaft of which it sits on so when you undo the center bearing you'll have to give it a pit of a tug to get it off. if you pull the center bearing downwards this usually helps. :D

Looking forward to seeing this resto progress. You've got the usual areas of rot, though not as bad as the two tech 1 sports I've owned.

P.S - get a tech 1 spoiler on there and some mint BBS!

Going for it i see! you didn't have to cut the loom where you mentioned. Not a problem though that some solder and heatshrink won't solve!. I managed to thread the whole thing out on my 2dr. I hope you took pictures of it all to see where it goes. I see you've labelled the loom up. This is golden when it comes to the refit! A great tip i got off oldskool a while ago

How did you manage to remove the loom without cutting it????? There was no multi plugs, no joins apart from where the wires terminated into the o/s door socket plug?? Cutting it was my last option but I could see no other way round it???

Cheers guys, I'm off op to the garage on Saturday to hopefully finish stripping the shell and get the front bumper and mirrors stripped, then it's ready to go...

....(cough)....erm... I forgot to take some photo's!!lol. :D

But, I did get the front bumper stripped down, sunroof drain tubes off and the rear vents off too which i had siliconed on(yes I know bad move). Also got some sound deadning off the bulkhead and the last of the trims outside, appart from the ones round the doors, they're being a bit of a pain to get off. So it's almost ready to go, just got to degrease the engine bay and a couple of other things but I've got a wee bit of time before the bodyshop can take it so I'll get is done soon, then prob start on the Engine winkeye
