Ignition on, and they automatically go onto a fast wipe without being switched on, tried changing the relay to no avail, any ideas what could be causing this?

Nothing wrong with the switch, it's only a couple of years old, and this has only happened since the battery has died, and the car has been jump started after not being run for a couple of months.

Sounds like a short on the motor if it runs permanently. If you have a spare one plug it into the connector and see if it works OK.
I'm not completely perfect.......there are some bits missing or broken.
But the weather here helps!!!

Assuming the wipers stop when the 'relay' is removed, the problem must be with the column switch, or the wiring between it and the 'relay'.

Yes, wipers stop when the relay is removed, I will try fitting another stalk to see if this makes a difference..

does the relay click when you pull it out of the board and again when you plug it back in? sure its not the fuse board?? i had a similar prob with my mk2 golf, the fuse board was corroded and shorting out inside cus there was water dripping on to it when it rained from the leaky windscreen seal!!! :o
