My inspection light has just started appearing on the dash even though when you turn on the ignition, four green lights appear. The car was serviced about 3 months ago and so clearly this light shouldn't be on.

Also, any ideas why my 'rear lights' check light would suddenly start lighting up when I know they both work just fine!??

thanks

Inspection light is just a twelve month timer. Nothing to do with the green lights, and has to be reset separately.
Check light comes on because there is an intermittent fault with the rear lights, or a cheap out of spec lamp fitted.
Slightest transient fault with the lamps, and the light will come on and stay on until reset by switching off the ignition.

Thanks Brian, i didn't realise the inspection light was independent of the of the 'countdown' lights. Is there an easy way to reset that for a relative novice without buying the tool or is it best to get someone else to do it? I guess I will try new bulbs in the back then to try and solve that little fault.

Thanks a lot for your help at such a silly time of day!

use a piece of wire to short out pin 7 and 11 at the engine plug (make sure you get it right too) turn on the ignition but dont start with the two pins shorted, wait about 7 seconds the green lights should reset. turn off ignition and repeat and the inspection light will turn off too.

note the older (smaller) plugs the pin numbers are marked in the underneath of the dust cap, they are correct only when the cap is ON THE PLUG, i.e the pin numbers will be wrong if you turn the cap over to look at the numbers.

the newer ones have numbers inside the plug itself and can be seen wioth aid of a torch.
