Remove it in one lump, it's much easier to remove the gearbox when out of car. Do you have access to an engine hoist with load leveler, if you do it's a piece of cake and will only take a couple of hours

Def leave the box on and drop the lump on the floor or a skate then lift the car over with two jacks.
If you have a crane aswell it comes in handy to lift the lump from the floor and if you use the proper lifting points on the engine it gives you the correct mounting angle aswell.
I always remove/fit engines this way but im sure a few other zoners will be on soon to tell you how wrong I am

Any time I've removed an engine I always disconnect it from the gearbox while it's still in the car and lift out the engine only. I've done this four times and refitted an engine three times with no problems (and no help). It can be a pain lining up the output shaft with the splines but it's never taken me longer than 1/2 an hour from when the engine is lowered into the bay till the first bell housing to gearbox bolt is in.

Hi troops,What stars you are, thanks for the advice.I have a lift eye by the cambelt cover, where should I support the back end?I will need to hire an engine crane but have jacks and axle stands. What sort of angle should I be looking for as I start to lift?

There is a lifting eye at the back inlet maifold side near starter motor. I all ways jack the back of the car up if removing the engine from the top.

Used my adjustable tilt engine lifting beam for the first time tonight. Was only removing a four pot, but with this, I could hold the engine and box at just the right angle to come up and out through the bonnet aperture.
