Long shot but I don't suppose there's a list of service parts and oils availible anywhere for a 318is?
I recently changed the drive belts but I'd like to complete a full service before it goes back on the road in April.

When you say service are you talking inspection or oil service, have a look here on the servicing part of the page.

Most of the information is on that link, I think the air and fuel filter is the same in all petrol E30s.Binkerment wrote: ↑Tue Jan 11, 2022 9:06 pmI am meaning an inspection service. The basic m42 servicing guide in the wiki is unfortunately missing but I imagine that would have had everything you’d need.

Cheers mate. I'll go through the list and order what I need. One more question. I'm not 100% sure what diff is in the car. I know normal gear oil can't be used in an LSD but can the oil for the LSD be used in a non LSD car? I don't see why not to be fairGreen wrote: ↑Thu Jan 13, 2022 12:14 amMost of the information is on that link, I think the air and fuel filter is the same in all petrol E30s.Binkerment wrote: ↑Tue Jan 11, 2022 9:06 pmI am meaning an inspection service. And how would I know of it had a LSD or not?
Under one of the bolts holding the back cover of the diff there should be a tag bolted on that shows the ratio. If it also has an S on it then it is an LSD.

Get yourself something like a Haynes manual. I used one to service, strip down and rebuild mine before there was internet. For heavy rebuilds they are not as good as they used to be but for servicing they are fine.Binkerment wrote: ↑Tue Jan 11, 2022 9:06 pmI am meaning an inspection service. All oils, filters plugs etc.
Jack the whole back end up and turn one wheel, if the opposite one turns the same way you have a working LSD,
If it goes the opposite way you don't. That can also happen if your LSD is worn out in which case academic what diff oil you put in it.
It can also mean you have a motorsport 1.5 way LSD which has no preload but they were only medium case and I doubt you have one of them in a 318is.

I didn't think the Haynes manuals covered the M42 16v engines.flybynite wrote: ↑Sun Jan 16, 2022 9:58 amGet yourself something like a Haynes manual. They dont sadly. So you need to get an E36 manual to cover the M42. That said fundimentally all the oil grades and levels etc are the same as the M40. I've always used a good quality 10w40 engine oil, gear oil is ATF same as the power steering fluid, open diff 75w90 or LS oil if it is an LSD but unlikely it is. It's an engine at the end of the day, they all need the same TLC. Consider taking the injectors out and send them to Injectortune for an ultrasonic clean, test and rebuild. Excellent value for money.Binkerment wrote: ↑Tue Jan 18, 2022 9:48 pm

Yes sometimes you have to mix-and-match to get the correct manual, same for some other BMWs but all the info is there.
Haynes say they do a manual for the 134bhp 1.8 E30 but I'm sure the red one says it does not cover DOHC

I never thought of that. So the E36 manual should cover the engine and the E30 manual will cover the rest of the car including electrics etc?
I'll try and source both.
Lastly, are parts like the HT leads dealer only parts?
Some things are best bought from dealer but most of the time the parts are made by a manufactured and then the BMW logo is stamped on.Binkerment wrote: ↑Mon Jan 24, 2022 6:55 pmrix313 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 18, 2022 10:51 pmThey dont sadly.
