Here's the best source for specific vehicles by year and type showing complete electrical systems:

http://www.armchair.mb.ca/~dave/BMW/e30/

American though.

By far the best circuit diagrams are found here: http://www.autolib.diakom.ru/CAR/BMW/ . The ones in the link above are reminiscent of wiring diagrams aimed at plumbers.
These too, are American, so no M40 engine management diagrams.

Two useful bits of info. would be the age of the engine concerned, and that of the car. Also, do you mean 316 or 316i, which are considerably different cars in the engine bay?

Just found the other post in the wrong forum, now locked, which answers the questions above.
Apart from checking pin 20, as detailed in my 'sticky' 'wiring warning' in the engine swaps forum, the M20 loom should plug straight in with no mods or problems.
The usual problem, when posts similar to this have been made, is that the engine to body earth strap has been left off, or the two battery connections from the engine loom either not connected or connected wrongly.

On connector C101 - the 20 pin round engine loom to body plug and socket.
