i have tried to search this, but cannot find anything on it, It seems the water leaks when I put the washer on from the top of the bonnet, would I require a double ended pipe? if so what sizes am i looking for and im guessing easy to fit?

If you mean it leaks from a hole in a circular valve under the bonnet, then this is very common.
New valve required.
