The last time I stripped a gearbox was in 1977,I had a Moggie Minor with a 1098cc engine and no reverse gear. The scrappie sold me a 'box out of a 948cc A40,I then discovered that the larger engine had a bigger clutch and bellhousing,so it sort of made sense to me to pull both boxes apart and transfer the innards of one into the other...

Getrang 'boxes are so tough that it is always cheaper to swap in another s/h box rather than mess about trying to strip and re-build,I would think that a gasket/seal set alone would render the exercise pointless from a cost point of view.

What is wrong with it? As with any strip and rebuild, take it apart, lay it all in an order so you remember how it came off and goes back together. Take photo's of everything for reference. Replace anything that's fucked :)

If it was Rattling Jim, it'l be the "Layshaft".
Well know problem on these boxes, but never a problem, just noisy.

thanks guys, i'm just going to clean it up i think and have a good inspection then put it back together. Reading the manual and taking advice from here i think i'll limit the work to that.
