Right i've done all the research into this getting on my nerves now.
The car in question is an M40B16.
I have changed the following items and still runs rubbish on cold start and idle, then when its warm it runs better but not amazingly smooth.
Items changed for new bits are:
Blue temp sensor
Air flow boot
Spark Leads
Spark Plugs
Coil
Rotor arm
Dizzy cap
Throttle position Sensor
Cleaned the Idle control valve and it works.
Throttle Body Cleaned
How can the AFM be tested? as soon as its unplugged it runs crap and cuts out.
It smells very rich out of the exhaust.
It sometimes 8/10 does not fire on all cylinders, considering there is only 4 it sounds like a spluttering machine.
The car was sat for 3 years and when was first brought ran perfect.
I have read about the crank position sensor on another site.
Running lumpy

Well I had idle troubel on another E30.
All I can add to what youve already checked/replaced is breather hoses? Are they looking a bit cruddy? Though you say sometimes it wont fire all cylinders, which tbh to me (non pro) sounds more electrical perhaps, rather than air flow.
Maybe a problem with ICV?
Anyaway, I found my ICV fault using this site, with a jetronic/motronic troubleshooter

Have you had the exhaust gas analysed (CO2) at a garage or similar, aiming for 1% at idle?
I said:
Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?
