The thing is, when the car is turning over (hot or cold) and i simply give the accelerator pedal a quick tap there is next to nothing happening apart from a bit of a cough. The response just is not there. But if i plant my foot on the pedal quite hard the response is very much evident????

Is this normal or is something not quite right? :?

Please advise.

Yeah, mine wasn't great and did exactly what you describe with just a cough.

Think it's related to the idle air valve not reacting all that quickly.

Wicked!

I shall check cable and valve. :thumb:

Is it just a case of tightening the cable or something?

I'm not convinced it's the cable TBH. Even if the throttle was blipped from under the bonnet, it hesitated. Also the cough described points to the cable doing something!

Think it's more due to the engine running momentarily weak as the throttle opens rapidly as the flap in the AFM takes some time to react and the ECU has no other way of sensing transient load, other than knowing that the throttle's not fully closed anymore :(

So basically i should consider replacing the AFM as well as checking throttle cable?

Think it's more of a design flaw than anything else.

The rotating components in the engine are bloody heavy and take quite a kick to get them going which combined with the above can cause that cough.

Definately check the cable as that's free :)

If you can borrow a known good AFM then give it a go, but don't rush out and buy one!

check the afm pipe is tightly done up at both ends, as are the little pipes that go into the icv, the throtle cable may not be tight so a delay in responce is noticed, also a dirty filter, leading to air starvation can cause it to suddenly choke. heavy scoring or carbonisation on the afm track may give wrong / confused intructions, or even a dirty TB may add to the delay.

im currently suffering from this aswell, so im gettin a 325i tb and slappin that on there, .. so even if it chokes im just gonna flood the bitch till she screams

Well i have replaced the filter with a K&N filter...i have cleaned pipes around throttle body and AFM. Yet to check cable. I have not had a look at it properly but how do i go about tightening the cable?
