Engine swap seems to be the easiest and cheapest option to get a good power increase!

Basically no. If the shell is good keep it and when you can afford it swap it for a M20 B25 or another engine swap like M52/M30

Engine swap. Anything you do to the 1.6 lump won't be worth the effort

without changing the engine there is little you can do but a full strip down only is the most cost effective way of getting more power out of anything with an engine

1. P/ex it.
2. Strip weight from the car.
3. Put a more powerful engine in it.

Why not fit an iS engine into the touring ? You'll get good economy and heaps more power.
Well worth doing if the shell's clean enough IMO..
