4 pot engine and box comes out easy. 6 pot is a bit tighter fit, and if helps if you have one of those adjustable tilting beam things, so that you can adjust the angle of the engine and box as they come out.
Still haven't bought one myself, although everytime I remove or fit a 6 pot, I swear I'll get one before the next time.

Yeah, I'd definately recommend lifting the car and taking the engine out from underneath.
If you go to the "Screwfix" website and look up axle stands, you can get a set of 6 tonne jobbies for about Ԛ£20 which safely hold the car at over 600mm off the ground.
The only other thing that's handy is a large sheet of wood.
Lower the car a bit, support the engine and box with some bricks or bits of wood on the sheet. Undo the cross member bolts. Then, lift the car nice and high and pull the whole lot out from underneath
P.s. Process has been simplified for my drunken mind.

i will probably get the hydraulic hoist to remove the engine from the top..
what should i replace when putting the other engine in??
so far i have got:
downpipe gasket
engine mounts (if they are worn)
I have yet to check the cables that connect at the bottom of the engine.. not sure how difficult they will be to reconnect.
any other advice is more than welcome

When I pulled the motor out of my car I split the engine and box, took a while to get the bell housing bolts out, but I had 2 long extension bars and a Uj on the ratchet which helped alot.
Hydrualic hoist hooked straight on the inlet manifold to rocker cover lifting point worked really well.

When i did my 6 pot, tok it out the top with the gear box attached. Just need to jack up car enough so it clears the gear box.
Took me 2 days to get it out and new one in, but then it was my first time and weather was pretty bad.
