I would suggest dropping the gearbox crossmember down, that should help a bit but you might have to take out your gearstick etc. Just support the box with a trolley jack.

hmmm yeah, if i take off the prop, drop the box a bit then the 2 twating bolts should be facing down a bit, which would give me room to at least get a turn on them,
cheers : )

craig do it from under the car
you need small sockets (3/8" drive 13mm i think) and one uni joint driving the socket, then long extensions eg 50cm worth then a bar or ratchet. once cracked you should be able to turn the extension whith just your hand if you're lucky!
as said, drop the gearbox down to make it easier, you can do it with just 2 axle stands under the front wishbones
if you get pissed off just imagine me trying to put the top 2 bolts back in my 535i gearbox in the e30, on the road, in the snow
suffice to say one of the 2 is still in my cellar

When I took the engine out of my 2.5 I loosened the gearbox mounts and propshaft(centre nut that holds it together) and lifted the engine a bit it pulled the engine and box forward so you have enough space to undo the top bolt
hope it helps dude

Put the engine and box back in on saturday by lifting the car up on BIG axle stands (which cost Ԛ£20 from screwfit direct) and lifting the engine assembly up into position. Hell of a lot easier and safer!
You only need to get the front of the car about 750mm off the deck to be able to get the engine out

what so you lifted the car over the engine rather than droping the engine in?? and do you think that was a better way of doing it?

I lifted engine and gearbox out, then undid the gearbox bolts, seemed easier to me... to be honest I didn't think of just dropping gearbox a bit!!!

this will make you feel better craig!
i tried to put my m30 in with the box on and it got very very jammed, oops, maybe we'll try without the box then!

i did build my car in a friend's garage to be fair. but by the time i'd decided i'd better put a different engine in it because the old one was buggered, i'd pi$$ed off both the mate and my dad sufficiently that the road was my only option

Must admit, was very very tight with gearbox on... had to get the shoe horn out... the power stearing pump looked like we were gonna have to take it off.. and we had to physically tuck the fan blades in while lowering it... I actually had a friend in the car, trying to lift the gearbox up for a better angle with rope through the lever hole!!!

never tried that on a bm, you'd have to take the crossmember off though huh? although then you could put the engine and box in as one regardless how big the engine is...craigieeb wrote:what so you lifted the car over the engine rather than droping the engine in?? and do you think that was a better way of doing it?
done it on my mr2 though, the engine doesn't like going in from the top! don't think hoists are dangerous, just don't go under the thing!

that's pretty tight!
my m30 would barely go in with just the flywheel and clutch plate on, don't know what i was thinking trying to put it in with a box on too
the engine wouldn't even come out of the 535i it came from with the box on (auto admittedly) had to cut the front of the car off with a stihll saw

eye some canny pictures there like, wilson, i recon if you took off the fan it would of fitted first time
, and yeah toby your right, it does make me feel a bit better knowing that you were out in the freeeezing cold, snow all around, soggy feet, snotty nose, and then there's me working away on one of the hottest days newcastle has seen for a long time
iv done a few engine changes thru the years but doing this one today just realy pissed me off for some reason and after hours of battleing there is only 1 bolt holding it all together

i had to walk away from it *AGAIN*, the amount of times this car has done this to me is unbelivable, if it doesnt play the game tomorow, toby, you gonna lend me your sthill saw???? coz i'll just cut the engine in to tiny little bits and remove it with chop sticks.

I only had probs getting it all out cos the hoist didn't quite lift high enough to clear the front of the car.
However, if I have to take it out again, I'll be dropping it out the bottom again.
It avoids the possibility of bashing things with a swinging lump of iron hanging from a length of string, plus when it's going back in, you can line all the mounts up and then just lift.
Finally, it'd cost about Ԛ£55 to hire a hoist from HSS, whereas my uber axle stands and a 2 tonne bottle jack came to a grand total of Ԛ£38

We very nearly took the fan off, but just managed to tuck the blades in, when we first lowered the lump down, it looked impossible, but some wiggling and pushing etc it just squeezed in with no damage... maybe next time I will try Turbo Brown's way...!!craigieeb wrote:eye some canny pictures there like, wilson, i recon if you took off the fan it would of fitted first time,

well after some devine insperatoin by my dad who drove 50 mile to stand there and say, why dont you just take off the engine mounts and sit the engine on the cross member??
and you know what, he was right you know, i lifted the engine just a little and unbolted the mounts, droped the thing down again on to the cross member, and hay presto, the gap just opend right up so i could get at the last bolt, WOOOOOHOOOOOOOO

now i just need to get my arse down to york to pick up my bottom end for the 2.5 to go in
