Distributor cap can be the cause of poor running and of not starting, but in no way is going to stop the engine turning over on the key!jaymo wrote:sorry guys, its just happened to me a few times on various cars and i know its happened to others and thats always cured it.

Try the diagnostic socket tests first. If the lamp doen't light, then look at the inhibitor switch. (There's a relay associated with the inhibitor switch as well)

Yes, but it wouldn't hurt to practice first, so you know what should happen.tylerma wrote:do i try this when the problem occurs?Brianmoooore wrote:Try the diagnostic socket tests first. It will if the connection it has stopped on has corroded over and thus not providing power to the ht lead. This system is connected thro the ecu to the starter system.Brianmoooore wrote:Distributor cap can be the cause of poor running and of not starting, but in no way is going to stop the engine turning over on the key!jaymo wrote:sorry guys, its just happened to me a few times on various cars and i know its happened to others and thats always cured it.

Jaymo, the starter circuit is a fairly simple one - switch, piece of wire, couple of plugs and sockets, starter motor - complicated slightly on an auto by a second switch.
The ECU on an E30 can stop the engine starting, but it has no control whatsoever on the starter motor circuit. This applies to all BMWs up to the introduction of the EWS immobilizer system.
The starter motor circuit would still work if the car were at the bottom of a lake.

i'd say its the starter motor solinoid when the solinoid gets hot from driving the brushes in contact with the rotar get glased over and don't conduct hence ign lights on but the engine not turning over, try changing the brushes there cheep and faily easy to fit

OP says no reaction whatsoever when key is turned to start.stanley wrote:i'd say its the starter motor solinoid when the solinoid gets hot from driving the brushes in contact with the rotar get glased over and don't conduct hence ign lights on but the engine not turning over, try changing the brushes there cheep and faily easy to fit
The solenoid would still engage the bendix even with worn brushes.
