Hey guys, I’ve acquired a getrag 260 and the chap said it used to whine in first pulling away….
Is this a straight forward job to replace the 1st gear bearing? I’m a competent DIY hobbyist, or is this a professional affair?

Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks

I've just had a full gearbox inspection done and had new seals and vapour blasting and it was £414 all in. I thought it was pretty cheap and it looks brand fire new. I consider myself competant in this field however I did chose the path of least resistance and just get a gearbox specialist to worry about it.

I have rebuilt a couple of 260s couple of decades ago for rear bearing which is what I have found usually goes. Rebuilt a 245 couple of times as well. 260s lasted well after rebuild (100k) 245 did not but that is no surprise really

It is doable but the gearbox has to come apart completely for most things, you need to be clean and organised, follow a good manual like an early Haynes. Problem is seeing what is causing the noise may or may not be obvious.

Next one that needs doing I will take it to a specialist.

What specialist did you use? That seems good value to me too!

The Gearbox Centre Northampton. They do a lot of classic stuff and have one guy there who specialises in them. Dan I believe it was.

Unfortunately you aren’t going to get much done with the internal gubbins on a job of only a few hundred. So you’d want the box to not need much
Definitely a job for the specialist
