Fiiting power steering+ e36 rack
Moderator: martauto
I'm looking to fit an e36 rack and power steering as i'm fed up with the keep fit steering and just wanted to check if i need anything else for it before i start. So far i have,
e36 rack + e30 rods and ends
PAS pump
Correct pipes
Belt
Resevoir with hose.
Am i right in thinking i also need a crank pulley?

Here's the ultimate guide Mike

This tells you everything and is where I got the info to make the spacer you have

I obviously thought a link to a step by step pictorial guide with part numbers of a e36 rack conversion would be pretty handy for the op as he is inquiring about doing just that!
Or am I missing something?
The link I've posted is for right hand drive and is the best I've ever found after hours of searching
hi buddy do you have an e36 rack on an m42 e30?rossmc88 wrote:Here's the ultimate guide Mike

not yet, but I have a Z3 rack to fit. I had everything I needed before, but sold it to Mike when I got rid of my E30. Then I bought another E30, this time an M42, so bought a Z3 rack for it since it's a keeper. I'm saving up for new arms, track rods and drop links before I fit itredcar wrote:hi buddy do you have an e36 rack on an m42 e30?rossmc88 wrote:Here's the ultimate guide Mike

oh ok and what linkage are you going to use. Standard e30 with different guibo or an e30/e36 hybrid?rossmc88 wrote:not yet, but I have a Z3 rack to fit. Im using the hybrid but the lower UJ is very close to the manifold. Ordered some new poly engine mounts and hopefully that solves it.
Is a z3 rack the exact same as an e36 rack in terms of the shafts etc.?
The Z3 rack is better as the splines match on both ends, so I don't have to make a hybrid like I did for the E36 rack kit I sold Mike. I'll still have to make a 22mm spacer like I did before to create the extra length needed.
Are you fitting the rack to an M42? If so, get some solid M50 e34 mounts from euro car parts - £30 ish pounds and this will raise the enging slightly and help with the clearance. This is what I'm going to do for my M42 installation

Was thinking of doing that but didn't want to raise the engine an extra 8mm.rossmc88 wrote:The Z3 rack is better as the splines match on both ends, so I don't have to make a hybrid like I did for the E36 rack kit I sold Mike. So i decided to buy some poly m42 e30 engine mounts. Engine shouldn't be moving at all!
I've heard even a few mm clearance from the uj and the manifold is good enough as long as your engine mounts don't let the engine move at all.
I just need to get some e21 gearbox mounts. Don't really want poly on the gearbox as it might vibrate.
How much were your poly engine mounts and where from? Would the e34 mounts raise the engine as much as 8mm?
Yeah I've read you only need a couple of mm clearance too
I would get a DanThe linkage, but I can get the spacers made up at my work for free

No need for us to have a new linkage, the linkage isn't the problem its just the lower UJ which is the problem.rossmc88 wrote:How much were your poly engine mounts and where from? Would the e34 mounts raise the engine as much as 8mm?

I got mine from revshift, they were $150 shipped. those e28 mounts which fit are 63mm whereas m42 mounts are 55mm.
Wouldn't really want to raise the engine.
