Try starting the car with it pulled away from the leads. It might not be the rev sensor(think it is though)but if not it might be the cause of your running probs...

Number one lead should unscrew and thread through the hole in the middle of the sensor.

At some point your car may have been owned by a boy racer with one of those massive rev guages with a shift light stuck on the dashboard, only reason i say this is becuase my mates has one fo the forementioned boy racer rev guages and his sender looks just like the thing pictured above

It's for diag of the rev's, going back into the ecu. Won't harm if it's not there.

The sensor is the E30s' equivalent of a cam position sensor. Without the signal from it, the ECU will not know which of the two pistons rising up the bores at any one time is on its compression stroke, and which is on the exhaust stroke, so it fires the injectors together, rather than just the one for the cylinder on the compression stroke.
The sensor is permanently fitted on its ignition lead, so it looks like the engine in question has been fitted with aftermarket leads.

You could try pulling the lead off the dizzy cap and seeing if the elbow bit will unscrew.

I bought a set of leads years ago from GSF and i had to assemble it myself(including threading it through the plastic casing!!)..it might be one of those sets.
