i always thought if you turned the input and both outputs turned the same way it was an lsd, if you turned the input and both outputs turned in opposite directions it was an open diff?
i remember testing it this way with a couple of supra/celica diffs a few years ago and it proved correct?

If you turn one wheel the other will turn the same way if it is an lsd.fuzzy wrote:i always thought if you turned the input and both outputs turned the same way it was an lsd, if you turned the input and both outputs turned in opposite directions it was an open diff?

If they turn in opposite directions or the other doesn't turn at all it is an open diff.
A better way to check is to just jack up one rear wheel and leave the other in contact with the ground. Try and turn the one that is raised and it should be difficult to turn. If it spins easily its an open diff.
All of the above is fine if the diff is in the car but if it is out i wouldn't trust tags i would remove the back plate and see what is in there.
If what you see is what is in the 2 pics m4xos has posted you have an open diff.

the funniest thing is, that pic i have posted up... with that diff on, jack the car up both wheel spin the same direction etc. etc. etc.
i know how to find an lsd spin the same way, off the car the driftshafts turn 1, the other 1 goes the same way etc etc! i aint thick!

There is no need for any more 'spinning' of anything your pic comfirmed its an open diff in your first post!

Well therein lies the reason. If the input isn't immobilised then you'll just spin the prop freely and both wheels will spin in the same direction, just the same as when the car is normally driving.m4xos wrote:nope!Elecblondie wrote:Was that with it in gear?m4xos wrote:the funniest thing is, that pic i have posted up... with that diff on, jack the car up both wheel spin the same direction etc. etc. etc.

i have the real PROPER lsd's in my shed then, thought this was one of them! its quite hard when they all look the same, same place, all broken!
send it back sideways! cheers m4xos

I'd be telling the other guy to keep the open diff as it is hardly worth the postage charge
