Hi there, just joined up as im thinking of getting an E30, my dad bought an 87 320 but has decided that he doesnt want it now.

I'll try and post some pics up at some point but basically its a 2dr, grey/silver colour, two previous owners and 112,000 miles.

It needs the lower suspension arm replacing as well as a set of front pads but the interior looks fairly immaculate for the age. Anyway im sure you'll all want to take the piss as im still part of the nova scene, not the chav sort though, ive got a bog std 1.2 at the moment with a 2.0 8v engine and a set of vauxhall 6 spoke alloys. But im quite tempted to sell it for the beemer.

Can anyone tell me what the problem areas are on these?

Thanks, steve.

welcome to the zone fella.

as for problem areas, rust is the main issue.

Ok cheers well as with the novas thats nothing im not used to! Anywhere specific? as the body on this one looks very good, a few dents here and there but no real rust on arches or the sills.

Anything mechanical thats likely to go wrong?

main rust areas include:

bottom corners of the windscreen (scuttle panel)
rear inner arches
front sections under the washer bottle (and opposite side)
drivers side rear arch behind the plastic cover (big hidden issue)

the tinworm seems prone to the arches, wings, inner wings, doors, boot, roof just about anywhere.

as for mechanical, just keeping it regularly seviced helps.

they do suffer from sensor problems, throttle sensors, temp sensors etc but this is all part of the fun :D

It does have a bit of a leak actually in the boot on the passenger side, not sure whether its the rubber seal thats the problem, but is this a common problem?

Welcome to the zone mate! For their age the only problems are rust... with good regular servicing, most of which you can do yourself, e30's are extremely reliable... Im sure the zone will give you all the info you need! :D

Hello again, thought i'd say hi as ive just bought my first E30 :D

Bought it off a fellow member on here, its a 2dr 316i in wine red with a 325 conversion, drove 3 hours from kent to buy it and it was well worth it!

As I may have mentioned before ive come from a vauxhall background and i've nearly finished stripping my 2.0 8v nova as ive basically had enough of it after 3 good years.

that nova 'pales' into comparison really, doesnt it? The 320 will feel sluggish compared, but unlike the nova, you won't look like a ****

You know it makes sense fella!

Yeah the novas just got the dash in it now, all the running gear is gone, shame really but it needed a fair bit of bodywork and I fancied a change. I wanted something rwd and was either going to get an E30 or a 200sx, the nova definitely feels alot faster, well I know it is as I left a 325 cabby for dead a few months back :o The beemer does have alot of grunt but its so smooth in comparison, and it doesnt handle anywhere near as good, obviously as the nova weighs nearly half as much so it was alot more chuckable, but im 26 now and you feel alot more grown up the second you sit in the beemer :) Plus it is a proper drivers car, everything just feels right in it.

Just found the old pics that the new owner sent me of the 320 my dad had, they stripped it out, caged it, welded up the diff and dropped a 325 in it.
