Welded Diff - are drum brake drive shafts strong enough?

I'm more than likely going to get my standard 1990 320i open diff welded in the next month or two and want to ask what the factory shafts are like?

I know that 325's had an LSD as an option and that drum brake and disc brake cars have different flanges but are the shafts themselves any different and therefore will I come into trouble driving a welded drum brake diff?

It's not going to be a drift car or driven sideways everyday but for the odd bit of sideways exiting a junction or around a roundabout I can't afford a new LSD currently and am bored to be honest. So want to be able to have more fun in the car.

I have the standard 14 inch bottlecaps with narrow tyres.


I'm not looking for replies about the pro's and con's of a welded diff I'm well aware I purely want to know if the driveshafts will cope :) Diff mount is poly and subframe bushes will follow shortly.

How long is a piece of string?

You could break a lot of bits with a welded diff, just depends on what you do with the left and right pedals really

You will if your insurance company finds out. Absolutely stupid idea! Either do it right with a LSD, or leave it as it is.
LSD was an option (and a relatively low cost one at that) on all E30s, not just the 325i.
