What is better in your opinion and how can you tell the difference? As I'm looking for an engine at the moment, does the high comp have 2.5 2.7 stamped on the head?

you are looking for 25E6 or 25K6 on the block.

The E is for the early high comp, K for the later lower comp engine.

A high comp will usually only have 2.5 stamped on the head, but anything is possible.

The best way to tell is on the flat section near the base of the dipstick there will be a code

25 6 E 1 - 9.7:1 comp
25 6 E 2 - 9.4:1 comp
25 6 K 1 - 8.8:1 comp

The higher compression lumps are without doubt a bit more pokey.
