Anything can be done with enough time and talent. In this case you'll need lots of both.

You're probably thinking of the M57TUD30 which is actually only a 3.0 diesel lump. This has been done, once, but I don't know anything about how. I can imagine that the electronics alone are phenomenally complex though (ECU will want to communicate with both the gearbox and diff, somehow).

Must ask - why?

300hp 500lb/ft and 40+mpg

Would be nice to see, a lot of work I imagine though.

I would like to do similar with an E28, put a modern 525d lump in but again, it seems very complex

The torque would be impressive, but I can't imagine how many miles you'd have to do to cover the cost of the conversion, and all the other mods you'd have to take advantage of those power figures.

And once you're on that sort of money, you might as well do it properly and ditch diesel altogether.

No, the mpg figure is never near that.

My commute to work, whilst driving a 535d was never more then 28mpg and a 2800 mile holiday to/around/from Austria (working out fuel/miles over the period) I only managed 34.8mpg.
Im sure sat at 60mph on a dual carriageway you can get 40+ but in the real world driving no

The engine is amazing, and to get the performance in a petrol you would be looking at alot lower mpg figures.

However in a light E30 id imagine the mpg would be very different!

My dads indicates an average of 40mpg+ whilst on the motorway.

34 in everyday driving mixture of dual carriageways and town.

i used to get close to 40mpg in mines on the motorway until the dpf filter got clogged up, my car went like stink i could only imagine how it would go in a e30. the later cars with the joystick gearbox had more bhp and were better on fuel aswell.

Reckon that's enough torque to start having problems with the diff mounting points?
