plugs are spot on, reassuring sandy colour as per haynes manual. doesn't smoke or use much oil.
what's odd is that 4 cylinders gave a higher than expected reading and 2 gave a normal reading. so i assumed the gauge overeads and that there's 4 cylinders ok and 2 lower compression.
however then i tested the m535i (which runs perfect, low miles, fsh, been an auto most of its life

, no smoke, no oil usage, makes superb power right the way through) and that gave the same comp reading as the 2 lower cylinders on the 335.
both tested with all plugs out, good battery, throttle wide open.
maybe the e30 engine's really coked up inside? i though maybe those 4 exhaust cam lobes were worn and weren't letting the pressure out - but i can't see that having an effect at cranking speed unless they weren't opening at all!
regardless, i can't see how the compressions would affect the high rpm power only - the engine makes really good power from 1k-5k rpm as you know - the faster the engine revs the less time there is for gas to leak out so why would only the last 1.5k rpm be affected so much?
in short, fcuk knows... all i know is there's an m30b35 on the bay for Ԛ£35 at the mo! so i'm not too worried either way.
