ECP are a mixed bag, I ordered some engine mounts from them that were listed as E25 M5 on their website, though the sticker on the box said E30/E34 - needless to say they weren't the right ones..I then ordered E24 mounts which came stickered up as E28!

Wouldn't use ECP or GSF for anything...Most of there stuff is cheap crap..And there customer service is crap too..Plus 9/10 the order is wrong..

Local motor factors for me everytime..

There's a geezer in my local GSF that owns a sport.. helpful as anything and they do OEM quality parts.. just don't opt for the cheaper stuff!

Hi mate,

Been reading this thread through. Sorry to hear of your misfortune.

I may have missed it, through some of the guff on here, but what went wrong with the engine.

currently open to speculation pending boyds damage assessment.

But, some kind of timing failure is likely, as the engine suddenly lost compression on all 4 cylinders at once, so pretty catastrophic.

Considered dropping a m20b25 in the bay? Be a whole lot cheaper and 6 pot rightness to boot.

The chain is still there and intact. So, it's jumped teeth and bent valves, and the normal cause is that the small idler gear has failed -it's No.11 on this pic:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do ... g=11&fg=25

It could be the tensioner blade or the guide rail (6 and 14) but that idler gear was well known to fail which is why BMW replaced it in late 1993 with a curved guide rail. Unfortunately, to convert to the later set up you'll need a lower front timing case as well. A new gear is £100.

Cheers Gary,

Dont know for sure i was driving then lost all compression (power) Mechanic and AA guy reckon from ear it was turning over too fast and had issues with the Chain.... When the rocker cover was taken off the Chain is intact so by process of elimination mechanic reckons it will be tensioners have failed and the chain has jumped its getting a good going over at the moment.

I am awaiting confirmation of all the above

I suppose that being a relatively early example of a 16-valve engine in a production car, there are bound to be the odd weak links, so to speak, although it's covered a decent mileage to be fair.

Has the cylinder head been removed for a look-see?

Well, in general. They brought out some 16-valve engines in road cars back in the 1970s, e.g., Lotus and Jensen-Healey, Dolomite Sprints, Vauxhall Firenzas, etc., and they tended to have quite alot of issues, so for a 1980s valver to cover 140,000 miles isn't bad really.

Engine wouldn't be to pricey at all. Could pick up one off here for around the £300 ish mark. Yes it's a gamble on how it runs, but m20's are simple. £100 or so for timing belt (m20's are belt) and water pump so you know it won't fail and away you go.

You have the advantage of having 51mm struts and rear discs being an iS. Only thing I'm unsure of is wiring, but it will be easy.

Can't possibly comment on insurance though.

Just food for thought

provided you get the whole engine loom with the engine and its a facelift job then its as simple as just popping the ecu plug through the bulk head and connecting the c101 plug.

dash then needs a 6 pot coding plug as does the obc.

He then needs a gearbox , clutch, mounts, prop , diff, radiator , hoses etc etc etc and to pay someone to fit it.
Only on the zone do engine conversions cost £200 :(
