What did you do to your E30 today?
Moderator: martauto
I went outside , took the cover off, drove it over the Beacons for an hour or so, took it back, put the cover on and decided it was time for it to go to another home. I think I have just realised I need a proper everyday car rather than a showpiece.
Just like Mr Webber, time to go is when you are at the top rather than sliding down the slope into obscurity and the knackers yard.

Filled it with most of the contents of my garage, put £10 of Shell's finest unleaded in and drove it to my parents garage where it will stay for the next 2 weeks until it gets its new home

You need to lift the rear of the liner as you slide it forward, this engages the liner's tilt bit....as the actress said to the bishop....and enables the liner to slide fully forward...as the, well, you should understand what I mean!buster wrote:Fitted a new sunroof panel. Yeah cheers figured it in the end. It wouldn't engage at the rear so I tilted it and poped it back onto the runners from out side then slid it back and it pulled forward to engage the pin thingys.

Depends on your interpretation of "bad".ah wrote:It can't be that bad!
I've thrown in excess of £6k at that car in the last 4 years, including a full engine rebuild and a £2.5k respray - at which point the only things that let the car down were car park dings. Structurally, the car was solid. Within 2 years the inner wings, chassis rails, battery tray, front valance, crossmember, floor and rear lower panel, 2x doors and the tailgate all developed serious tin worm.
It needed all the rear suspension bushes replaced (including the beam), rear top mounts, rear discs, pads and handbrake shoes.
The HRW was totally inop despite having power to it, and a good earth - that'll be a new screen needed, then. The rear washer pumped water into the boot, the headlining had started to sag. Then there sundry other little niggles as well.
Now, I call that bad! I don't have the luxury of being able to run more than one car, so doing what would have amounted to a nut & bolt restoration on the E30 was out of the question. ......Plus I paid for my E46 roughly half of what I would have needed to spend on a restoration.
For me, particularly as I'm becoming physically less able to do much of my own mechanical work, running a 24 year old car as a daily driver is no longer viable.
So, yes, it is that bad. But having said that, I'm as happy (maybe even happier) with the E46 as I was with the E30 when I first bought it. .........But I won't fall into the trap of trying to keep it on the road past its sell-by date.
........And then there's the fuel economy..........

Really Stuart?

Mart.
Only the E46 cab left now.
Just got too old.
Just got too old.
You could have a weekend toy with no pressure to keep it on the road.
My e36 318ti has been the best car I have ever owned for lots of reasons but I`m really excited with the addition of the Baur. I can take my time with this one because it is what it is and must be kept standard which means less pressure.

I know lots do, but it's not an option for me. I actually got very close to buying a TR6 a couple of years ago, though, until I realised a couple of things.........martauto wrote:You could have a weekend toy with no pressure to keep it on the road.
1) I don't have space to keep another car. Most of the households around me have at least 2 cars and it's always a nightmare trying to get parked. When these houses were built (1903) parking family cars was unheard of for the people living here.
2) I can't justify to myself the running costs for another car when I already have one that does all I want. I don't drive for the hell of it, I don't have the time for that luxury - I do all of my driving out of necessity.
I'm done with cars as a hobby/plaything. I won't be going back there anytime in this life.

Made a todo list:
Fix fuel guage
Fix temp guage
Fix central locking so I don't have to turn key in passenger door, pull handle at the same time, switch on ignition and pull the driver pin up :s
Fix heater switch - stuck on hot,
Re wire high level brake light to come on with brake lights when the headlights are on as well as off,
Cambelt / water pump replacement,
Replace (new parts sitting on the kitchen table) wishbone bushes, tie rod ends, droplinks,
Source and fit 2nd seat,
Address rust spots,
Replace arb bushes,
Replace steering boss with a shorter one (wheel too close),
Extend spray of home made windscreen washers,
Replace fuel filter, part waiting (old one possibly fitted wrong way round)...
may have missed some
It's only a track car but am having to commute some of the week. Could also do with a cushion!

Winter wheels fitted today. I'd forgotten how hilarious the old barge looks on such skinny rubber. Ride comfort is immense though with 70 profile tyres. The Goodyear Ultragrips are so quiet as well, tyre noise is non-existent.

Prawn Crackers?
I had some Chinese for dinner tonight, and also walked a Chinese Shar Pei, then set up a new Canon printer made in China, coincidentally.
