Don't know yet mate - down in Cornwall last weekend it died in a fairly big way; sheared the main diff mount & detached a driveshaft... Will get round to looking at it this weekend - I've just dumped it on the drive under a car cover for now, ******* thing.

Caddy's now running 50/50 on veg oil; yet more money saved (& apparently the 'environment' kinda likes it too)

Thats bad luck,hopefully there won't be too much damage,my front pass side driveshaft on the R5 jumped out of place a few months ago for no reason,nothing was loose,still can't work out how it happened.
I now have a shagged input hole in the gearbox,shagged driveshaft bearings,oh and the drive shaft is bent...............which reminds me,I really must get around to fitting all the replacement parts,it's a wonder it still drives mind it is rather cloncky,but have done about 3000 miles since the incident.

Nice to see the Caddy running on veg oil,why only 50/50 though,why not 100%?

Yeah we'll see... got the old open diff that can go back on for a while, hopefully won't need too much else. Fingers crossed.

I'll probably go higher on the veg oil, but you can run into starting problems unless you fit heaters etc, & I've only started experimenting today! Smells nice though!

Once I get sorted with how much I can use, what to blend it with etc, the next step's to start sourcing waste oil from restaurants etc - free fuel. & the best bit is that since Sunday, you don't even have to register or pay tax!

I ran a merc diesel on chip fat for a while, and yes it smells like a chip van, beware of dodgy HM revenue and customs looking people sniffing your tail pipe, they are out to catch people who don't declare the veg oil use as fuel.

Ford Transit vans run on a nice 100% mix only needing to add some diesel in the colder months, in summer Jon I reckon you could do 100% in the caddy, but keep a can of diesel at home incase it doesn't start one morning when it starts getting proper nippy.

I've tried alot of cars on veggie oil because of my job and my dads old job, having old diesels around all the time comes in handy. Keep a spare fuel pump and filter handy too (in the glove box would be cool), trust me on that one!

Last thing you need is to break down and the AA come out and discover your 'alternative' fuel.

I'll have a dig around I have a good article from mechanics something or other (monthl I think, sold in whsmiths!) where they explane how to make bio fuel and refine used chip fat for fuel. And the best cars to use them with.

Think thats why I bought the merc, you could litterally strain the chunks out with a kitchen sieve and it would run on old oil, (for a while anyway!), tho I ran a pug turbo diesel withought a fuel filter once for over 10k miles with no problem, no chip fat oil in that tho, not good for turbos for some reason!

Back in the day(as it now appears it might be) could you not have claimed for a 5% chip fat to 95% diesel ratio anyway? And then slip and poor in 50/50.

I only knew one person who did try to go legit, a taxi driver who thought it was more than his mortgage was worth to f*** with the HMRC, so he did something similar tho it was a little more complicated than that he had to produce reciepts of oil bought as fuel and other stuff, it was a complete PITA for him and they made unannounced visits to check. Last thing you need is a check, to be over and then they back date all the tax to when you declared your 'alternative' fuel, on the mix ou were actually using!

Had a fair few french diesels as a uni student tho, and as my dad was a taxi driver I kept on getting given free 4-5 year old diesel cars for free, high milage and painted yellow, with some really crap interiors BUT they were free and mechanically sound, taxi drivers may drive hell for leather but taxis have a bi-yearly checks by the council and a yearly MOT so 3 road worthy-ness (is that a word?) test a year, and the council checks are notoriously hard to pass.

I thought white diesel was standard pump diesel, for use in trucks vans and cars. Commercial or personal but not agricultural.

There are companies out there that will dye diesel any colour you like, for what purpose I don't know, I know red diesel is for agricultural farm vehicles only and is not supposed to be used in road going vehicles at all, but they coulour it red to see if it has been, because HMRC don't trust anyone.

Since the 1st July, it is no longer necessary to declare producing your own 'biodiesel' (ie anything using alternative oil) as long as you're not using more than 2500L a year Wheras before you had to fill in a form every month to tell em how much you used each month, & pay the duty on it.
