Check the steering UJ under the bonnet first, as if it's squeaking, this will be transmitted up the steering column.

Sounds like the bottom bearing on the steering column, simple fix, remove lower panel, measure up 150mm from bottom of column tube, drill into the side of the column tube with 5mm drill bit, pump in some 3in1 oil, job done....

Doesn't that method risk getting swarf inside the column tube?

Drill with a new drill bit, at an even speed and watch in amasement as the metal just "spirals" outwards....

Tried and tested the above, and can confirm it works...

Thought that. Can you get a magnetised bit.

Also it sounds drastic is that a recognised fix? Think I'll go with the wd40 and new copper ring if thats possible. I had the same issue with the Is bought a new wheel and that sorted it but don't want to shell out unless I have to.

You need to get oil to the lower bearing on the column..spraying WD40 upwards is no good, it will not penetrate, and gravity will see it drip off.

I suffered for ages with a really harsh and squeeky lower bearing, I looked around the web, and came across the above method.

Drilling a small hole in the side of the column six inches up, allows you to insert a 3in1 oil can tip, and put some oil in, it flows down the inside of the tube, and coats the bearing, job done...

There's a short thread here, about an e36..

http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/f17 ... fix-t8378/

I think 75mm up is not enough on an E30, mine was more like 150mm up from the bottom of the column.

It's best to drill in from the side, and allows easy application of the oil into the column.
