Powder coated engine parts?
Moderator: martauto
Hello all I've just had the cam cover and inlet manifold powder coated in black but the company that have done this didn't mask the underside so there is like an over spray also where the gasket fits on the cam cover, they have coated the area where the seal fits my concern is will the seals for the cam cover and spark plugs still seal? Regarding the overspray if its left on will the oil eventually breakdown the powder coating that in turn will end up around the engine?

Its worth cleaning the gasket area, as when the engine gets hot, it could melt the powder again. I usually mask everything off first.

I washed mine out with water as much as I could,DanThe wrote:Id be more concerned about whats inside the manifold, especially if they sandblasted it
I wouldn't use it until you know 100% that it's clean! I know of a few guys who's engines got destroyed because of powdercoat overspray getting into the engine.
Well a word of advice ask your powdercoater to do the masking before you end up in worse shit. I was not going to leave that over spray on so I thought id clean the underside of the cam cover my mistake instead of using soap and a wire brush I used carb cleaner within half an hour all of that on the under side started to peel off like rubber the bad bit was through the oil filler hole the carb cleaner got to the face and it left white marks all over it which wouldn't come off so I gave it back to the coaters to re-do And I asked them to mask this time

All depends what's in the carb cleaner, some of them have some fairly nasty shit in.
