A friend of a friends 320d or possibly 330d has ran out of fuel. They put some more in and cranked it over for about 25 minutes with a battery booster but not fuel is getting to the injectors.

Any ideas on what to try?

You should look into the Manual, I know modern Mercedes with a turbo diesel just need new diesel fuel and then just crank the engine to it starts after 20 seconds. Maybe you need to bleed the system for air before its starts....?

Depends on the vehicle, some do,some don't,my works Transit for instance self bleeds, but a diesel Merc I had needed to be primed.

do you ralise how much work it is to get to the pipe?!

running out of fuel in these is bad, because it con fcuk the pump, but the system is clever enough to deal with air-locks (nothing too huge!!)

Sounds to me more like a pre-supply pump problem. There's a pump thats located next to the near-side chassis rail, under the rear passenger footwell that 'pre-supplies' the high-pressure pump with fuel. Check this is working. Its under a cover though, so get your 10mm and 8mm sockets out!
