Ive got a bit of a problem with my 318i here. Its a work in progress thing and im slowly returning the car to factory standard (it was molested in a bad way by an ape), and after doing the SI battery fix, and rebuilding the steering wheel slip ring and brush for the horn, im starting to enjoy this, but the gearbox is driving me spare right now.

Family members have likened it to churning butter, digging a hole, and undoing a wheel lug, all of which are pretty bad, and it really is terrible to use.

The first problem, is the previous owner heard the term short shift kit, and thought it meant shortening the shifter rather than the throw. He has taken to the actual gear lever, with a hack saw, reinstalling a wrecked momo gear knob with glue (no joke) and since the gaitor no longer fitted, threw it away.

Not good.

My next problem is that its sloppy as hell and feels like its been bent. To go into reverse, I have to slam it over to the left SO hard and so far, that it pushes INTO the left hand side of the plastic centre console, before I can go up and get reverse.

fifth is not hard to get to, and isnt against the side, and I would expect that fifth would be just as close to the side as reverse is, but it isnt.

It is as if all of the gears have moved to the left about 1-2 inches. would this be a bent lever? or the joining piece (not sure what its called) that connects it to the gearbox underneath the car could be bent?

Also, the gears are very clunky, and rough, with alot of wobble and noise.

So the problems are, the shifter is sawn off, and too low, wobbles, clunks, is sloppy between gears, and has too much engine noise comming through in gear, is difficult to get into gear (particularly reverse), feels like its been moved over and scrapes the console when reversing, and feels terrible.

If anyone can suggest a solution for me to ANY of the problems I am having I would be very thankfull!

Also, Im not sure how it should *feel* so if any of you can describe how this gearbox should feel, that would be great too.
:D

By the way, the car is a 1985 Australian delivered 318i manual with an M10 engine.

Ok, so what would that solve for me and which parts are involved in that? Also how much does that generally cost from the breakers (whereever you are, so in england) Im very interested in getting this done quickly and solving the entire issue.

Linkage from a breakers is likely to be worn as well, unless you're lucky enough to find one that's been replaced.
Sounds like a perfect time to install a Z3 gearlever and new linkage.
The linkage has been modified at the gearbox end, so you will need the bit that fits on the selector shaft, the linkage itself and the gearlever.
Change the little oil seal on the selector shaft as well.
