intermittent holding back

hi all my first post,car e30 m40 engine 1989 1.8i ,problem is driving at any speed the car holds back as if the fuel or electrics are turned off take foot of the gas all ok, foot back on gas holding back starts again ,foot on gas while holding back i can accelerate through the holding back and car runs ok ,this happenscompletely at random,when this problem happens the whole car shudders,any one had the same problen orpossible cause. regards steve

the car been serviced? Fuel filter renewed? plugs all ok? Dizzy/rotor fine?
Got cable ties? Get diffin..

have the same problem with my 2.5 m20 changed everything but fuel filter so will try that this weekend. does your rev counter die aswell?

If your rev counter is dying it would suggest to me an electrical fault of some sort.

It the crank position sensor Ok, maybe loose.

sounds like the blue temperature sensor next to thermostat if it's the M40.
