The M50 lump will hopefully have new home in the next couple of weeks.

Mine is a nice early non-vanos lump from an E34. Whilst it sits on a pallet in the garage I'm thinking I may aswell change out the water pump. Obviously these engines are chain and not belt driven. Is the chain and any tensioners maintenance free?

Are there any other jobs I should be looking at whilst I've got the engine on the floor?

I don't know M50's but generally if i've got an engine on the stand or floor, I'd refresh the basics. Pumps , chains / belts and give the engine a good clean up and maybe a lick of paint.

This acts 2 fold, one: makes the engine look 10 times better and 2 makes it easy to spot any leaks if anything goes wrong. :)

Just my 2p

The chains/tensioners will cost you more than the engine is worth though

Sump gasket is a must, the one thing you dont want to be doing to an M50 engine in an E30 engine bay is the sump gasket!!

Water pump should be fine but check it out anyway, if the coolant has been allowed to go manky I would change the thermostat housing gaskets/bolts also as they tend to fur up

Check around the oil filter housing for leaks, only a couple of gaskets here and they are literally pence
