Shadow linlng/ smoked lights

As i am fairly new to e30 ownership (i love every minute of it)
1; What is shadow lining and can it be done at home or is it a kit you have to buy?
2; How do you smoke front and back lights and can it be done at home or is it a kit you have to buy?

early e30s come with a chrome window surround (the long strips around the windows), later ones came with a black surround called shadowline, you can spray the chrome surround on or off the car black or you can buy a shadowline kit from someone on here as they usually come up with people breaking cars. I would recommend spraying it on the car as the window surrounds can be a b*tch to get off and bend easily.
