cracked sump is poss to weld

my mates jst cracked is sump on his 1990 316i and was wondering if it is possible to weld and is it mild steel?

I don't know if it is aluminium or mild steel. The M20's have an ali sump and I know the 316i's have ali sumps too, you should be able to tell just by having a quick look. They can both be welded but obviously it depends on the damage. If it's ali it'll need to be welded by an expert, in which case it's probably easier to ge one off a breaker, I'm sure some one on here would have one for you.

I have an M20 and I have put a couple of holes in the sump. They have all been repairable but it looks a bit of a mess now. I don't think it was too expensive to get it repaired.
