is it fairly straightforward to transplant a 318is engine etc into a std 316i touring?

Ya, All you'll need is the engine, box, loom and Ecu.

You'll have to weld on the bracket near the strut tower for the coil pack.

Best bet is to get a rusty iS donor car and swap everything over.

There's a few threads on this already now at this stage, so a search might help too

If it's a 316i then it will be easy, as above.

cheers I'll do the search thanks (should have done that first)

anyhow yep it is a 316i late (94) touring, and we've had it for 6 yrs now and it has the sport leather int in beige and a few options so it will basically be improved upon and not sold for a bigger engined version!

the loom, is this for the engine bay and relevant connections to the ECU?

doing a search but the results are mixed. MODS, if preferred please move this to the engine modification/swap section as I've only just realised there's a section for this type of subject?

Done this coversion with the help of a good friend recently, it is much easier than you think, transplant engine loom and ECU in one, only need to unplug the ECU and leave it on the engine going in, two engines out and one back in in a day and a half.
An E30 touring, two E28 M5's and an E28 528i.

If it is not an I then it means you need to fit a fuel pump, the one from the 318i works (fuel return and feed on cap of fuel pump). Use your original fuel feed line as the return (low pressure) then nab the fuel feed line from the injection donor car, and it just clips in place. I did this on my 2.5 and it works, but I have my doubts about the carburetterd cars fuel tank being much cop, I get really bad fuel starvation when turning hard/fast right with less than a full tank, and it missfires at top end which I still think might be to do with the pump/tank in some way (but might not be).
