It's the length of the rear passenger compartment: L = long wheelbase (an extra 11cm in the rear passenger compartment).

Same engine AFAIK, though I'd imagine the propshaft is longer!

I'd love a 750il apparently you can recline the rear seats pretty much into a double bed!

There's a 5.0L and 5.4L varient but i and iL models could have either. All were auto.

Does the 5.4L have a VANOS system does anyone know, it looks like it does?

In E32 was only M70 - 5.0 engine. 5.4 is M73 and was fitted in E38 and late E31. None of M70/S70/M73 have a Vanos, all have one cam per bank.
