im new to the e30 scene so just ironing out some problems.

iv boutght a 316 touring ( m40 engine ) and it has a top end miss fire ( between 4500 and 6000 rpm) sometimes it goes away but for a majority of the time its there. im stumped on what it could be.

can anyone help me with this??

Sounds like you have a worn cam shaft.

cheers, i thought it could have been the camshaft worn along with the rockers, as i replaced the tappetts a few weeks ago to quieten the noise from the front down but to no avail.

but the thing that stumps me is that this missfire is intermittent, sometimes it goes and othertimes it doesnt?

but i suppose i had better start saveing my pennies as insurance is due in the next couple of weeks and i want a 325 so i can strip to put the lump in my old hector :D

You removed the camshaft to replace the lifters/followers.
Did you fit the camshaft sprocket in the right position?

yeah me and my mate ( he's a mechanic ) put it all back together correctly, well when i say correctly we noticed the free play on the camshaft sprocket ( about 2 teeth worth!) so tried it in all 3 positions, and smack bang middle to how it came off was best.

its strange as it doesnt matter wether its hot or cold it will do it, always between 4.5 - 6 k, so i bought some 318 injectors, misfire is still there.
