the gear stick on my 325e is a bit floppy. im taking it to the mechanincs tomorrow to get a few other things fixed. ive heard it is probably just a bush in the box. should i ask them to fix it? is it cheap? or is it a more involved job?

its not the box, its the gear selector/gear stick interface. there is a bushing that wears out.

pre 1986 - its the Tee-shaped bushing that connects the shift rod to the transmission selector shaft, its held on by a circlip, remove /replace

post 1986 - its the same thing but held on by a plastic clip/ring that snaps into place

if this does not fix it, then you will need to replace the lower (and maybe upper) shift lever bearings.

its cheap to fix yourself, and will take about 1-3 hours depending on if you know what you are doing!!

it will cost you parts and about an hour (or two) of the mechanics time, buy him some Tooheys and he may do it for free!!
