Steptronic?? (m60/62 into e30 thoughts) / 6 Speed box info

Hi,

I'm just wondering if any of you rate the Steptronic gearbox offered by bmw on the M62 engine?? Any comparisons over the 6 speed manual of the 540i or the automatic?

Next question is... was it offered on the M60 (specifically the 540i of the E34), or just the M62 engines of the E39?

If not then I doubt it will be a good idea to mate it to the M60 engine as it probably works with the engine management of the M62 right.

And finally, can any of you tell me what the 6 speed box is like, and has anyone fitted it to an E30.

I drove an E39 540i for a 20 miles blast one afternoon and I was sort of impressed with the gearbox. Bearing in mind I wasn't used to it, it was pretty easy to use and changed nice and smoothly in auto mode. Manual mode (well, manual selection) was ok, but still changed too slowly for me - but overall I'm a manual fan and I didn't hate the steptronic so I reckon its a pretty good autobox if you're kinky that way.

I'm pretty sure they are M62 only the old E34 used the M60 with a normal 5 speed auto sealed for life jobs, lol

E30 M3 with an S54 with the SMG would be interesting
