Just bought a sub and amp to fit in the boot,got all the wiring kit,but do i need a crossover for this or is it like normal speakers,you just fix the leads and wires and go for it....

depends, does your deck have a sub out? If so then it's already filtering out the bass signals that will go to your amp and eventually to your sub.

A lot of amps have a switch on the side to choose between 'Full Range' and 'Low' or 'Sub'

This is a basic crossover, built into the amp.

Have a look on your amp, it should have a switch with the letters: full, hpf, and lpf, if yours has got one the use it on lpf (low pass filter) regardless of whether your cd player has dedicated sub outputs or not. if your cd deck does it will improve the sound, if not it will do the job as normal
