First you should read Bentleys "Forced induction Engines" - book so you'll get overall picture of turbocharging ;)
Also read with thought other turbo threads so you'll get the "big picture" clear.
From these sites you can find lots of information, worth reading:

www.r3vlimited.com , www.bimmerforums.com

Basically the basic, good setup for M10 turbo is:
M10B20 block, crankshaft and connecting rods from E21 / E10
M10B18 "big valve" head from E30
M30 gearbox
Megasquirt'n'spark is good EFI, don't use carbs, they just don't work well enough.
That setup is good enough for 500hp.

Of course you need pistons (mahle are good enough for 500hp), camshaft (schrick is good) etc etc..

M10 and S14 parts are compatible and S14 parts can take more abuse than M10 parts but they are really expensive.

BMW got ~1600hp out of M10 based turbo engine in F1:s on the '80s. M10 / S14 based competition engine makes and takes ~1000hp easily so virtually only the sky is limit with these things :) Of course budget tends to come first on the way :P

i would co for a fuel injection engine rather than a carb.

just sounds crazy to have all that technology of a turbo going through a carb when you have the flexibility to play around with fuel pressure and injectors.

imo
