backlash/jerking through the drivetrain pre facelift 325i

probably sounds worse than it is but when coasting in gear mainly 4th and 5th at around 30 to 40 the car has a tendancy to feel as though its rocking back and forth my old 320 did it as well, is there a simple explanation, its fine when accelarating or there is light load applied when cruising it just bugs a bit when lifting off or just pottering about in it???
