Couple of fuel pump questions...

I've got a sticky fuel pump - it's needed a bang to start up on three occasions today. I phoned a local BMW dealer and they quoted £178?

- I've got a 1987 320i (Motronic) - will this have the single in-tank pump, or the two-pump setup I've read about?

- where's my best source for a decent cheap replacement?

I've got an 87 325 and it had the later type, is your car facelift or not?

You could try puting a wanted ad up and get one much cheaper.

You could try taking the inspection plate off and having a look!!

Might not be knackered, could be loose wire, or dodgy connection

I have - this is how I banged it. I just have no frame of reference to determine which of the two options I'm seeing, once the cover's off


£108 + VAT is more than a 1/4 of what I paid for the car! I'll try a wanted ad...

Last one I bought from a scrapyard (See brianmoooore's E30 related holiday problems thread) cost me a fiver, but that was from an exceptionally cheap scrapyard.
On 318i's, at least, the changeover from twin to single pump was sometime in 1987. I had two '87 318s, and they were one of each.
Some E30 fuel pumps have one rubber fuel pipe connected to them, others have two. If your existing pump has two pipes, then your replacement must as well, although the actual pump from a single pipe can be fitted to a two pipe mounting frame with a little work.
If you use a two pipe pump to replace a single pipe pump, then the extra pipe needs to be blanked off with a short piece of hose and a plug.
