engine trouble :( help please

hi, i just bought a bmw 320i k reg not an e30 the newer one, its done 100k miles and the valve cover gasket today started leaking oil onto exhaust manifold earlier on today :(
I have just been out in it tonight and when i came up to a junction, the engine cut out, didnt want to start to easily, and the engine has also started to make a knocking noise (sounds like the head?)
Does anyone have any idea as to what can be wrong? likely to be expenive???
