Every now and again my fuel ecomony gauge below the rev counter stops working whist driving. Sometimes (not always) when it stops working the engine seems to momentarilly cut out for a second. This isn't a major issue but it does affect the read out on the computer for mpg. Any ideas what it could be? Many thanks

My battery once tipped over in the boot and connected to the body (stripped interior) lost all power and electrics intermittently, wasn't fun. Only noticed as giant sparks were jumping around in the boot...

Sounds like the fuel rate signal from the ECU goes missing, and when the engine hesitates, the injectors (from which the fuel rate signal is derived) are cutting out.
Not a fault I've heard of, but I would hunt for dry joints in the ECU, or try a different one.

I had an extreme version of this once on two different E30's - appartenly in very cold weather the fule pump (in the tank out back) cannot generate enough pressure for a fuel feed resulting in momentary loss of power and sometimes just cuts the engine right out.

Get it secured down with the proper clamp!!
A few weeks ago a car hit a telephone pole a few hundred yards from here. The unsecured battery flew right over the roof of an adjacent house and scored a direct hit on a caravan parked behind the house, leaving a neat battery sized hole in its roof!
Unsecured battery is also a MOT failure.
