The Zone shop would be a good place to start for advice and parts. :)
I'm not completely perfect.......there are some bits missing or broken.
But the weather here helps!!!

sounds like the stem seals are worn mate..
the manifolds seem to have a habit of cracking, personally I'd get the original welded up not the best or prettiest idea but it will do the job. They are neigh on Ԛ£500 from the dealer for a new one!

The IS will need a coil pack holder too otherwise you will be wondering where the coil pack sits.

A rebuild will cost a fortune on an M42 unless you can do it yourself?

Performance wise you can either go down the Tim.S route and go to 2.1ltr's, ITB's and megasquirt along with other goodies or just get it cammed, bigger TB, remap and maybe a freer flowing exhaust from the manifold back but tbh I dont think the IS is that restricted.
Bollocks to this 24v scrap!

650-750 isnt too bad tbh mate sounds like a good price. But is this using BMW parts or supposed oem replacements?
