recently bought some recaro leather seats(proper ones with the high backs) and went to fit them today,

ive got a 318is, and for a start i noticed that the subframes were differnt, but i trial fitted the ones on the seats and they went on the front, but only one hole lined up on the back

are the subframes interchangeable?

on a plus side, the backs went straight in...so i now have half leather interior :P

What model did you get he recaros from?

The subframes for all E30s should be the same. The subframes for E30s and other BMWs such as the E36 are different. If you are having a problem aligning the bolt holes, the frames might be out of alignment with eachother. This can happen if someone messes with the seat position lever under the front of the seat when the seats are out of the car.

as above all the same, yours could be from E36,E34,E21,E24 (likely if the back seats fit) etc hence why they dont fit the front, but that said, if you have three of the four bolts on properly i would imagine it will be ok.

Also never heard of highback recaros? there are comfort and sport seats which can be covered in leather, fabric and half/half

They should fit, put the bolts in the rear of the runners first, and then tighten the nuts at the front, I've had the same problem in the past, and this solved it!
