Back in May, my car failed to start a couple of times.

When I turned the key, the dashboard lights would come on, but no starter (battery seemingly OK). BrianMooore suggested I tried starting the car by jumping two pins in the diagnostic socket, in case it was a dodgy ignition switch.

Well, having Tipexed around the pins, and kept a bit of wire in my car, it never re-occurred. Yesterday, itâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s started doing it, and now itâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s happening regularly.

If I turn the key, I get a click from the solenoid, but no starter motor. If I jumper the two pins on the diagnostic socket, itâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s just the same. Do it a few more times, and the engine starts.

Apparently the previous owner had a similar problem, and replaced the starter motor (used one I think) about 2 years ago. Any ideas? Are there any relays I should replace?

I have checked the cables to the starter, and they are all secure. There are 3 wires connected to the starter, one of which is a thin black wire - what is that for? (looks a little bit ropey, but ok I think).

Where is the engine earth strap located?
