M20's do tick alot.

1. Tappets
2. Injectors are loud
3. exhaust blowing on cylinder #6

normaly you adjust the tappets, they quieten down so then you hear the injectors more....its just a vicious circle...

Srangely enough, you can reduce the noise (in the cabin ) quite noticeably by stuffing the void under the centre badge in the steering wheel full of "Blu-Tac@ or cotton wool! The engine oil viscosity csn also have a slight effect, some say the magnatec is good.
If it ain't broke..
Fix it till it is :)

Check the noise they make when youre adjusting them ,literally rock them with your fingers. They are sometimes noisier because they are pitted and generaaly worn,if you remove the eccentric adjuster (be careful not to drop the 10mm nut as it may dissapear down an oil channel) and examine it closely the wear will be evident.New ones can be purchased at your dealer.Failing that you may as well get a reconditioned head with all the extra expense and so on... It drives me mad too !
