Can you take the internals of a small case lsd and put them into a large case open diff thus giving you a large case lsd??

ok, what about the guts from an e23 diff into an e30 large case? output splines and all? I have a really mint 3.25:1 LSD but its in an e23 case and I would like to transplant it across, suppose I should just find a wrecked e30 large case and strip it. Has any1 bothered trying it?
